Carved Teak Temple Mandir with Side Staircases

This is a wide floor-standing temple mandir in solid teak, approached by a flight of carved steps at each side with a peacock balustrade flanking each flight. The deity platform sits above them as elevated ground rather than as a shelf, backed by a densely carved panel and set beneath a canopy carried on turned columns. Three domes rise from the roofline with the largest over the centre, each capped with a finial.

The base beneath the platform carries drawers behind carved fronts, with a Shri medallion at the centre and a frieze of carved cows and figures running below, all on a moulded plinth. The steps themselves give tiered surfaces descending from the platform, where smaller murtis, lamps or a photograph sit without crowding the principal deities above. Every Brown Rabbit mandir is made to order, so the width, the number of steps, the storage layout, the back panel and the finish are agreed with you before production and the dimensions confirmed in writing. The solid teak and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the piece, delivery across India is free, and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

Why a Home Temple Should Have Steps

In a temple you go up to the deity. The sanctum stands on raised ground, a flight of steps leads to it, and a balustrade runs along each side of the approach. That sequence is not decorative; it is what tells you that the ground you are walking onto is different from the ground you were standing on. Domestic mandirs drop it almost universally, because steps consume width, take a great deal of carving and hold nothing. What is left is a platform at a convenient height, which is practical and says nothing.

Putting the steps back changes the proportion of the whole piece. The platform stops reading as a shelf and starts reading as elevated ground with an approach to it, which is the difference between furniture and architecture. They also solve an arrangement problem that large mandirs always have: where to put the smaller murtis, the extra lamps, the photograph, without crowding the principal deities. Tiered treads descending from the platform give each of those a natural place at a lower level, which is exactly the hierarchy a temple uses. The balustrades are carved as peacocks, one to each flight, and every element is cut and polished by hand by master Indian artisans.

Crating Projecting Stairs and Peacock Balustrades

The two step flights project forward and sideways from the main body, which makes them the widest points of the piece and the first things to strike a doorframe. They are crated separately from the central structure rather than shipped attached, which both protects them and allows the mandir to come through doorways that the assembled width would never pass. Each flight travels on a bed cut to its stepped profile so every tread is supported rather than the flight resting on its two ends.

The peacock balustrades are the most fragile components on this mandir: slender, standing free along the outer edge of each flight, and carved with necks and crests that project. Each is individually wrapped and fitted with its own rigid guard, and they are not left mounted on the flights during transit. The three domes and finials sit under a frame guard bridging the roofline, the carved back panel is faced across its full area, and the drawers are immobilised. Dent-free, with the balustrades and every finial intact, or we make it right.

Free Delivery Across India and On-Site Assembly

Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. This is a wide commission with a great deal of carving, so production takes longer than on our compact pieces. We give you a realistic completion window once your specification is confirmed, and if you are working towards a griha pravesh, a festival or a particular muhurat, raise the date at enquiry so we can tell you honestly whether it is achievable before you commit.

The mandir arrives in sections, with the step flights and balustrades separate, and our team assembles and levels it in position. Before ordering, measure the wall width available against the full assembled width including both flights, since the steps add considerably to the footprint, and measure the ceiling height against the full height including the centre finial. Decide the placement in advance: traditionally the mandir sits in the north-east of the home with the deities facing west or east, away from bathroom walls and out of direct sunlight.

Warranty on This Temple Mandir

The solid teak and its joinery are guaranteed for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the entire life of the piece with no expiry. The step flights are carried on their own framing rather than cantilevered off the platform, which is what keeps the treads level and the balustrades upright for decades, and those frames and their joints are covered for the full term. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through the oils in the timber, so the protection lasts as long as the wood.

The polish is a serviceable surface and easy to keep beautiful. Because this mandir is polished rather than painted, the finish can be cut back and rebuilt in place at any point in its life without stripping the piece, and we do that for our own pieces at an honest price. If you intend to keep lamps on the step treads, marble inserts can be fitted into them so those surfaces wipe clean in seconds. Keep the mandir indoors, away from standing water and prolonged direct sun, and regular dusting will do the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Both. They are the temple approach, which gives the platform the character of elevated ground. They are also genuinely useful: the treads give tiered positions for smaller murtis, extra lamps or a photograph at a lower level than the principal deities.

Yes, and many households do. If you plan to keep lamps there regularly, ask for marble inserts in the treads and we will build them in, so those surfaces take the heat and ghee and wipe clean in seconds.

Send us the wall available and we will confirm the full assembled width in writing, including both step flights. The flights can be narrowed or reduced in number so the piece sits exactly right in your space.

No. The flights and balustrades ship separately from the central structure and are fitted on site, so the mandir comes through doorways comfortably. Share the narrowest point on the route at enquiry and we will plan for it.

Yes. The centre medallion can carry a different symbol, a deity motif or plain carved panelling, and the carved frieze beneath it can be changed too. Tell us what your household observes and we will make it to suit.

Yes. Cupboards suit thalis and larger samagri, drawers suit daily items, and we can do either or a mix. The carved fronts are laid out around whichever you choose rather than being a standard module.

Dust them with a dry soft brush. They are among the most admired details on the piece, and because nothing bears against them in position they keep their crisp carving for decades with very little attention.
