Open Four-Sided Carved Teak Mandir with Toran Arch

This is a solid teak mandir built as a canopied pavilion, open on all four sides and carved to the same standard front and back. A cusped toran arch spans the front opening, with a small turned drop hanging free from each cusp so the arch reads as a fringe of pendants. Above it, a densely carved pediment rises to a crest with carved peacocks standing at the outer corners, and the four pillars are ringed and fluted with elephant brackets at their heads.

Inside, a lotus-carved pedestal sits on the raised platform to lift the principal deity above the others, and the platform stands on a deep carved base of foliate scrollwork over a moulded plinth. Because there is no back panel, the mandir can be placed away from a wall and oriented freely. Every Brown Rabbit mandir is made to order, so the size, the finish, and additions such as drawers, a marble platform or a solid back are agreed with you before production and the dimensions confirmed in writing. The solid teak and its joinery carry a 20-year warranty, termite damage is covered for the life of the piece, delivery across India is free, and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.

The Arch That Hangs Rather Than Spans

A toran is the decorated arch that marks the entrance to a shrine, and in stone it is carved as a series of cusps across the opening. Reproduced in wood it is usually simplified into a scalloped edge cut from a single board, which is quick and reads as a flat silhouette. On this mandir it is built the older way: the cusped arch is carved across the opening, and from the point of each cusp a small drop is turned separately on a lathe and hung so that it stands clear of the arch behind it. What you see is a fringe of pendants with daylight between them rather than a shape cut from a plank.

Each drop has to be turned to match its neighbours and hung so the line of the fringe stays true across the span, and there is no way to shortcut it. The other decision worth noting is the absence of a back. Finishing all four sides to the same standard doubles the carving on the rear elevation, which most makers avoid because the back of a mandir is usually never seen. Doing it means the piece can stand in the middle of a room and be oriented to face whichever direction your household observes, rather than being dictated to by where the wall is. Every element is carved and polished by hand by master Indian artisans.

Protecting Hanging Drops and Carved Peacocks

Two sets of components on this mandir hang or stand free, and both would be destroyed by ordinary padding pressed against them. The turned drops along the toran arch hang clear with air on all sides; packing foam pushed into that gap would load each drop sideways at its thinnest point. So the arch travels with a rigid guard bridging across the full span beneath the drops, so nothing touches them, and the whole fringe sits in an enclosed void.

The peacock finials stand at the outermost corners of the pediment, which makes them the first things to meet a doorframe or a low ceiling in handling. Each is individually wrapped and fitted with its own rigid guard, and the mandir never rests on the pediment at any point; the crate carries it on the plinth so load runs through the base. The four pillars and their elephant brackets are wrapped along their length, and because this piece is finished on all four sides, the rear elevation is protected as carefully as the front. Everything is rigid-crated and strapped. Dent-free, with every drop and finial intact, or we make it right.

Free Delivery Across India, and Where to Put It

Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance surcharge and nothing added to your invoice for freight. Production begins after your specification is confirmed, since nothing is held in stock, and we give you a realistic completion window at that point. If you are working towards a griha pravesh, a festival or a specific muhurat, raise the date at enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether it can be met.

Because this mandir is finished on all four sides, you have more freedom than usual about where it goes, and it is worth using that. Traditionally the mandir sits in the north-east of the home with the deities facing west or east so the person performing puja faces east or north, and being able to stand the piece clear of a wall means you can achieve that orientation regardless of how the room is built. Keep it away from bathroom walls and out of direct sunlight, which fades a natural polish. Our team assembles and levels it in position. Measure the full height including the peacock finials against your doorways before ordering.

What Is Guaranteed on This Mandir

The solid teak and its joinery are warranted for 20 years from delivery, and termite damage is covered for the entire life of the piece with no expiry. On an open pavilion the whole structure is held square by the joints between the four pillars, the canopy above and the platform below, so those are cut and pinned rather than screwed, and every one of them is covered for the full term. Termite cover has no end date because teak resists termites through the oils within the timber, which means the protection lasts as long as the wood.

The polish is a wearing surface and one of the easiest to maintain. Because this mandir is polished rather than painted, the finish can be cut back and rebuilt in place at any point without stripping the piece, so it can be brought back to new whenever you wish, and we do that for our own mandirs at an honest price. The open form also keeps the timber clean: with air moving on all four sides, lamp smoke disperses rather than settling. Keep the mandir indoors, away from standing water and prolonged direct sun, and it will ask very little of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, and that is one of its best qualities. It is carved and finished to the same standard on all four sides, so it can stand in the middle of a puja room or at the end of a hall, and be turned so the deities face whichever direction your household observes.

Beautifully. With air moving freely on all four sides there is nothing to trap smoke, so it rises and disperses instead of settling against the wood. The timber above the deities stays clean with little more than occasional dusting.

Yes. Drawers or a base cabinet can be built into the lower section to order, sized for thalis, samagri and daily items. Many families also pair this mandir with a matching chowki or small cabinet alongside, which we can make in the same carving and finish.

It raises the principal deity above the others on the platform, which is how deities are arranged in temple practice. Additional or differently sized pedestals can be made to order if you would like more than one raised position.

Yes, and it is a popular choice. Marble takes hot diyas, ghee and water offerings in its stride and wipes clean in seconds. Specify it before production so the platform is framed to receive the slab.

The photographs show the mandir styled to give a sense of scale. Tell us the height of your principal deity including base and crown at enquiry and we will size the pedestal and the clearance under the arch around it.

Send us your doorway and stair measurements along with the space available, and we will build the piece to come in comfortably. Delivery is free anywhere in India with no distance charge, our team assembles and levels it in position, and dent-free arrival is guaranteed.
