Overview

This is a royal luxury handcrafted carved teak wood sofa finished in gold leaf with black lacquer accent lines and silver-blue damask upholstery. The front carries a pierced carved gilt crest above a fan-shaped upholstered centre panel, shaped side panels, deep gilt scroll arms and a pierced carved apron on carved gilt feet. The reverse repeats that treatment: a matching carved and gilded crest, a fan-shaped damask centre panel, fully upholstered side panels, and the same carved apron - so both faces are finished to the same standard.

That makes it a genuinely free-standing piece rather than a wall-dependent one. It suits large drawing rooms where seating floats away from the walls, open-plan spaces where a sofa divides living and dining areas, hotel lobbies and lounges where guests approach from all sides, and back-to-back arrangements. Every configuration is available, from a 2 seater to a 9 seater set, corner or L shape.

The Story Behind This Sofa

Finishing the back of a sofa properly is one of the clearest markers of how a piece was made, and it is almost never discussed.

On a standard sofa, the reverse is covered in a cheap lining cloth - sometimes not even the same colour as the fabric - and the frame behind it is left rough and unfinished. It costs less, it is quicker, and it works perfectly well as long as nobody ever walks behind the sofa. But it also means the piece can only ever sit flat against a wall, which quietly dictates your entire room layout for as long as you own it.

Building both faces to the same standard roughly doubles the carving on the back rail and adds a complete second upholstery job: the same panel shaping, the same pattern centring, the same tailoring. The frame itself has to be designed for it too - there is no hidden side in which to conceal tack lines, so every fixing has to be planned to fall where trim or carving will cover it.

It is more expensive to make. It is also the difference between furniture you arrange and furniture that arranges you.

Factual specification for this royal luxury carved teak sofa:

  • Material: Solid teak wood frame, hand-carved (no veneer, no engineered wood in load-bearing members)
  • Style: Rococo carved show-wood sofa with fully finished reverse
  • Back finish: Reverse fully carved, gilded and upholstered to match the front - carved crest, fan-shaped damask centre panel, upholstered side panels and carved apron
  • Finish: Hand-laid gold leaf with black lacquer accent lines; customisable to antique gold, silver leaf, ivory and gold, or dark wood polish
  • Carved detail: Pierced carved crest to both faces, deep gilt scroll arms, pierced carved apron, carved gilt feet
  • Upholstery: Silver-blue damask with teal accent cushions; fabric, velvet and genuine leather available
  • Placement: Suitable for centre-of-room, room-divider, back-to-back and island arrangements as well as against a wall
  • Seating: Made to order as a 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 seater, corner or L shape, with matching single chairs and centre table
  • Delivery: Pan-India, free shipping

Packaging and Transit Protection

With two finished faces there is no safe side to rest this sofa on, which changes how it is crated. It travels supported on its seat frame and feet only, with clearance behind the back so no weight ever bears on the reverse carving or upholstery - on a conventional sofa the back is exactly where handlers would rest it.

Both crests are unshipped where the construction allows and wrapped individually in foam shaped around the openwork. Both faces of the upholstery are covered in soft breathable cloth with a moisture barrier outside, never sealed plastic. The gilt scroll arms, the pierced apron and all carved feet are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the leaf, with no tape ever contacting the black lacquer lines, which mark easily. The crate is marked clearly that the piece has no unfinished side and must not be laid on its back, with orientation and lifting points shown, and photographed sealed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Every sofa is built to order. Typical lead time is 10 to 12 weeks from order confirmation - a finished back adds a full second upholstery stage and roughly doubles the carving on the back rail, so this design takes longer than a conventional wall-backed sofa of the same size. Larger sets take longer again. We share progress photographs of both faces at carving, gilding and upholstery stages.

Delivery is free anywhere in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and elsewhere. Our team unloads, unwraps and places the sofa to your intended layout, whether against a wall or floating in the room, and levels it - which matters more for a free-standing piece, since an uneven floor is obvious when a sofa is not braced against a wall. Confirm doorway, stair and lift dimensions in advance. International orders quoted case by case.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery and the hand-carving on both faces. If a joint works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately.

A finished-back sofa needs cleaning on both sides, which is easy to forget. Dust and vacuum the reverse on the same schedule as the front, or the two faces will age at different rates and the difference becomes visible when the sofa is moved. If the sofa floats in the middle of a room, both faces also receive light from different directions - rotate the piece end for end once a year to even out fading, which is not possible with a wall-backed sofa and is one of the quiet advantages here. Clean the gilded carving on both faces with a dry soft brush only, never a cloth. Blot spills straight down. Lift rather than drag, always.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

Yes, fully - carved, gilded and upholstered to the same standard as the front, with a matching crest, fan-shaped damask panel and carved apron. Most sofas, including expensive ones, have a plain lining cloth on the reverse because the maker assumes it will stand against a wall.

Yes, and that is what it is designed for. It works floating in a large drawing room, dividing an open-plan living and dining space, set back-to-back with a second sofa, or angled across a corner - none of which is possible with an unfinished-back sofa.

Cost and time. Lining cloth over a rough frame is quicker and cheaper than a second full upholstery job plus carving on the back rail. It works fine against a wall - but it quietly dictates your room layout for as long as you own the sofa.

Yes. It roughly doubles the carving on the back rail and adds a complete second upholstery stage with the same panel shaping and pattern centring as the front. The frame also has to be designed so every tack line falls where trim or carving conceals it.

Clean both sides on the same schedule, or they age at different rates. If it floats in a room, rotate it end for end once a year so light falls evenly - a small advantage a wall-backed sofa cannot offer.

2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 seater, plus corner and L shape, matching single chairs and a centre table. Tell us your seat count and where in the room the sofa will sit, since a floating arrangement changes the sizing advice we give.
