The Story Behind This Sofa

Fabric protection is worth understanding properly, because it is oversold by some retailers and dismissed entirely by others, and the truth is in between.

A stain-protection treatment is applied to the cloth after upholstery and works by coating individual fibres so liquids bead on the surface instead of wicking straight into the weave. It does not make a sofa spill-proof and it does not remove the need to act quickly. What it does is buy you time - often several minutes rather than a few seconds - which on a cream sofa is the difference between blotting a spill away and living with a mark.

It is invisible and does not change how the cloth feels. It wears off gradually, faster on the seat than the back, and should be reapplied every few years on a sofa in daily use.

What it will not do is protect against dye transfer from new denim, ink, or turmeric - three things that mark pale upholstery permanently regardless of treatment. Those need immediate professional attention, not home remedies.

Packaging and Transit Protection

Cream upholstery is the least forgiving thing we ship, because any transfer mark is immediately visible and most cannot be removed on site. The sofa is covered first in a soft white breathable cloth - white specifically, so no dye can transfer onto pale fabric if any condensation forms. Sealed plastic is never used against the upholstery, since trapped moisture leaves tide lines on cream cloth that will not brush out.

A separate moisture barrier goes outside the cloth wrap, then a full foam blanket. The carved crest, both arm volutes with their rosette bosses, the apron shell and all cabriole legs are individually foam-wrapped and taped clear of the antiqued polish. Cushions and bolsters are bagged individually in white cloth. The sofa is corner-guarded, blocked into a fitted crate with foam on every face, marked for orientation and lifting points, and photographed wrapped and sealed before dispatch.

Every sofa is built to order. Typical lead time is 9 to 11 weeks from order confirmation - an antiqued tonal polish takes longer than a plain finish because the colour is built up and then worked back by hand to match the upholstery tone. If you want stain protection applied, allow a few additional days for treatment and curing after upholstery. Larger sets take longer, as each piece is finished individually. Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery and the hand-carving. If a joint works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately. Stain protection reduces the risk of marking; it is not a guarantee against staining and is not covered as a warranty.

On pale upholstery the rule is speed, not scrubbing. Blot a spill straight down with a dry white cloth - white, because a coloured cloth can transfer its own dye into damp fabric. Work from the outside of the spill inward so you do not spread it. Never rub, and never apply water to a mark on damask, which leaves a ring worse than the original spill. Vacuum weekly with a brush attachment, since ground-in dust is what greys a cream sofa over years, not spills. Rotate cushions monthly. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Have the fabric protection reapplied every few years, and call a professional upholstery cleaner rather than experimenting with home remedies.
