Overview

This is a royal luxury handcrafted carved teak wood settee finished in gold leaf and upholstered in a large-scale floral tapestry. The design carries a carved crest centred on a palmette above a serpentine back rail, carved gilt scroll arms rolling outward with carved rosette terminals, a reeded gilt band running the width beneath the seat, a carved foliate apron, and carved paw feet.

A settee sits between a sofa and a bench: lower in the back, shallower in the seat, and lighter in the room. That makes it the piece to add when a drawing room needs more seats than it has wall space for a second sofa - against a side wall, under a window, in a bay, across the foot of a bed, or in a wide hallway. It is also the natural companion piece in a large sofa set. Made to order in any size, and as part of a full 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 seater configuration.

The Story Behind This Settee

Large-scale patterns are the hardest fabrics to upholster and the most impressive when done properly, which is why they appear on show pieces like this one.

Every patterned cloth has a repeat - the distance before the design starts again, which on a big floral can be half a metre or more. The upholsterer has to centre that repeat on the back panel, centre it again on the seat, and align it so the pattern appears to run continuously from back to seat rather than jumping at the join. On a settee, where back and seat are both visible at once, a misalignment is unmissable.

The practical consequence is fabric consumption. A plain cloth is cut with almost no waste; a large-repeat pattern needs substantially more - sometimes half as much again - because every panel must start at the right point in the repeat. That is a real cost, and it is why patterned upholstery is quoted differently from plain.

Scale matters too. A large floral needs a large surface to read; on a small chair it becomes a fragment.

Factual specification for this royal luxury carved teak settee:

  • Material: Solid teak wood frame, hand-carved (no veneer, no engineered wood in load-bearing members)
  • Style: Carved show-wood settee, lower back and shallower seat than a full sofa
  • Finish: Hand-laid gold leaf; customisable to antique gold, silver leaf, ivory and gold, or dark wood polish
  • Carved detail: Carved crest with central palmette, gilt scroll arms with carved rosette terminals, reeded band beneath the seat, carved foliate apron, carved paw feet
  • Upholstery: Large-scale floral tapestry with the pattern repeat centred on both back and seat and aligned across the join; fabric, velvet, damask and genuine leather all available
  • Pattern note: Large-repeat fabrics require substantially more cloth than plain, and are quoted accordingly
  • Placement: Side wall, window bay, hallway, foot of a bed, or as a companion piece in a full sofa set
  • Seating: Made to order in any size, and as part of a 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 seater set, corner or L shape
  • Delivery: Pan-India, free shipping

Packaging and Transit Protection

Settees are compact enough to be handled casually in transit, which is exactly why we do not pack them casually. The carved crest, both gilt scroll arms with their rosette terminals, the reeded band and all four carved paw feet are individually wrapped in high-density foam and taped clear of the gold leaf.

The upholstery is covered in soft breathable cloth with a moisture barrier outside, never sealed plastic. The seat cushion travels flat in its own bag. Where a settee ships as part of a larger set, its crate is labelled to the piece and its cushion labelled to the settee, since cushions across a set look similar but are cut to different sizes. Corner-guarded, foam-blocked into a fitted crate with foam on every face, marked for orientation and lifting points, photographed sealed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Every settee is built to order. Typical lead time is 8 to 10 weeks from order confirmation. A large-repeat patterned fabric can extend that, because the cloth quantity is calculated from the repeat rather than the surface area and may need to be sourced specially. Where the settee is part of a set, all pieces are made together so pattern scale and alignment are consistent across them. We share progress photographs after carving, after gilding and after upholstery, including a shot of the pattern centring.

Delivery is free anywhere in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and elsewhere. Our team unloads, unwraps, places and levels the settee at your address. Being smaller than a sofa, a settee usually clears difficult access where a three seater will not - which occasionally makes it the practical answer for an upper floor reached by a narrow stair. International orders quoted case by case.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, its joinery and the hand-carving. If a joint works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse, or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Fabric and foam are consumable components covered separately.

Tapestry and heavy woven fabrics are durable but they hold dust in the weave, so vacuum weekly with a brush attachment - on a textured cloth this matters more than on a smooth one, because ground-in dust dulls the colours and it is the commonest reason a patterned sofa looks tired. Never use a beater head, which abrades the raised weave. Blot spills straight down; do not rub, which distorts the pattern and can lift fibres. Keep the settee out of direct sunlight - a multi-colour pattern fades unevenly, since different dyes fade at different rates, and that is far more visible than uniform fading on a plain cloth. Dust the gilded carving with a dry soft brush only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

A settee is lower-backed, shallower in the seat and lighter in the room than a full sofa. It adds two or three seats without the visual bulk of a second sofa, which makes it the answer when a drawing room needs more seating than it has wall space for.

Against a side wall, under a window, in a bay, across the foot of a bed, or in a wide hallway. It is the most under-used piece in Indian drawing rooms precisely because it fits the places a sofa cannot.

Fabric consumption. Every patterned cloth has a repeat, and each panel must start at the right point in it, so a large-repeat design can need half as much cloth again as a plain one for the same piece. That is a real material cost, quoted separately.

The distance before a design starts again - on a big floral, often half a metre or more. The repeat must be centred on the back, centred again on the seat, and aligned so the pattern runs continuously across the join. On a settee, where both are seen at once, a misalignment is unmissable.

Usually not. A large-scale pattern needs a large enough surface to show a full repeat; on a single chair it reads as a fragment. If you want this fabric across a full set, we would suggest the large pattern on the sofas and settee and a coordinating smaller design or plain on the chairs.

Yes - it is the natural companion piece. Sets are built as 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9 seater with the settee included, plus single chairs and a centre table, all made together so finish and pattern alignment match across every piece.
