Overview of this dark walnut carved bed

This luxury wooden bed is built entirely from solid teak and finished in a dark walnut tone. The design is restrained by the standards of royal carved furniture: a single crest at the top of the headboard, a framed cartouche on the footboard, moulded panel borders and turned posts. Nothing is gilded and nothing is upholstered, so the whole effect rests on the carving and the polish.

That restraint is deliberate. Buyers furnishing a bedroom that already has patterned curtains, a rug and a wardrobe often find that a gold or fully upholstered bed competes with everything else in the room. A dark walnut bed anchors the space instead, and it sits comfortably alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

The headboard is a solid panel rather than a slatted or open frame, which means it blocks draughts from an external wall and gives a firm surface behind the pillows. Matching bedside tables with the same moulded drawer fronts and turned feet can be built alongside the bed. Custom sizes are made to order in king size, queen size, double or any dimension you specify.

The story of the walnut polish

Dark walnut is a colour, not a wood, in most Indian furniture. The tone came into Indian workshops through Victorian and Edwardian imports, where English and European furniture arriving in colonial households was almost always finished in a deep brown. Local craftsmen, working in teak and rosewood, learned to match that tone with stains and shellac so their pieces could stand beside imported ones without looking out of place.

The method that survived is French polishing with a rubber: a cloth pad charged with shellac and moved in continuous circles over the surface, coat after coat, with the polisher judging by drag and sheen rather than by any measurement. A good polisher will lay down dozens of passes on a headboard of this size. Spraying a lacquer would take an afternoon and produce a flat, plastic-looking film.

Our artisans still polish by hand for this reason. Handcrafted Indian luxury shows itself in the surface as much as in the carving, and a hand-rubbed walnut finish can be revived decades later with fresh shellac. A sprayed finish, once damaged, has to be stripped completely.

We do not publish fixed dimensions or weight, because each bed is built to the buyer's mattress size and room. Send your mattress measurements and the wall width available and we will confirm the exact overall footprint in writing before production begins.

Packaging

A dark polished surface shows every scuff, so the packing on this bed is built around protecting the finish. Each polished face is first covered in a soft non-abrasive wrap laid directly on the wood, with no tape ever making contact with a polished surface. Tape residue on shellac is difficult to remove without disturbing the polish, so all fixings are made to the outer layers only.

Foam sheeting goes over the wrap, with extra thickness at the carved crest, the finials and the footboard cartouche, since these projecting elements take the first impact in any knock. The turned finials are removed where the design allows and packed separately.

The bed then travels in a purpose-built wooden crate sized to the individual piece, with internal bracing so nothing shifts. Fixings and assembly hardware are bagged, labelled and fixed inside the crate. Crate dimensions can be confirmed with you in advance if your building has a narrow staircase or a small lift.

Shipping

We deliver across India and accept international orders for this bed. Since it is made to order, dispatch follows the agreed production window rather than stock, and that window is confirmed in writing when you place the order.

Within India the crate travels by covered transport, secured against movement, and is delivered to your address. The headboard is the largest single component and cannot be reduced after it is built, so we ask you to confirm lift and staircase access before production. If access is restricted we can design the headboard to split at a concealed joint.

Assembly at your home is arranged in most Indian cities. The bed goes together as headboard, footboard, side rails and slats, with bolted fixings that also allow it to be taken apart cleanly if you move house later. International orders are quoted per destination with export-grade crating and full documentation; destination duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility.

Warranty

Brown Rabbit warrants the solid teak structure, the joinery and the hand carving of this bed against manufacturing defects. If a joint works loose, a rail fails or a carved element cracks because of a fault in the making, we repair or replace it.

The hand-rubbed walnut polish is warranted against lifting or flaking caused by defective application. It is not warranted against scratches, heat marks, water rings or damage from cleaning agents, since these come from use. A shellac polish is repairable in place, and we can arrange a repolish visit or supply guidance for a local polisher.

Gradual deepening of the walnut tone with age is normal and is not a defect. Damage caused by moisture exposure, by transport arranged independently by the buyer, or by repairs attempted by others is outside the warranty. Full terms are issued in writing with your order confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this product.

A hand-rubbed shellac polish is the most repairable finish for a solid wood bed, because damage can be blended in place rather than requiring the whole surface to be stripped. Sprayed lacquer looks flatter and cannot be spot-repaired. This Brown Rabbit bed is finished in a hand-rubbed dark walnut polish on solid teak.

A dark bed reads as heavier, but it does not shrink a room if the walls and flooring stay light and there is visible floor under and around the frame. A dark walnut bed against a dark wall is what makes a bedroom close in. We can supply the same carved design in a lighter honey or natural teak shade if your room has limited light.

Yes. The side rails bolt to the headboard and footboard posts rather than being glued, so the bed can be dismantled into headboard, footboard, rails and slats and reassembled without damage. Tell us at the order stage if you expect to move, and we will specify hardware that is designed for repeated assembly.

A solid headboard blocks draughts against an external wall, gives a firm backrest and stops pillows from slipping through. A slatted or open headboard is lighter and lets air move. For an Indian master bedroom with an air conditioner running, a solid carved teak headboard like this one is generally the more comfortable choice.

It is made to order in Indian king size, queen size, double or any custom dimension. Because the frame is built around your mattress rather than the reverse, we ask for your exact mattress length, width and thickness before production, and we confirm the finished external footprint to you in writing.

Yes. Side tables, a dresser and a wardrobe can be built in the same design language and polished from the same batch. Matching later is harder, because polish shade varies slightly between batches, so it is worth deciding the full set at the time of order even if you take delivery in stages.
