The Story Behind This Bed

Round beds are romantic in a photograph and demanding in a house, and an honest maker should say so before taking your money.

Space. A circle wastes corners. A round bed of a given diameter seats two people less generously than a rectangular bed of the same footprint, because the widest point exists only at the centre line. Plan for a diameter larger than you think, and for clear floor around most of the circumference.

Mattress. Nothing standard is round. The mattress is cut to the platform, usually as a foam or foam-and-spring build, and it must be ordered alongside the bed rather than afterwards. We can arrange it or supply dimensions to your own supplier.

Bedding. Fitted sheets do not fit a circle. Most owners use flat sheets tucked under, a large quilt, and custom-made fitted sheets if they want them.

Construction. The platform rail is a full circle - laminated in layers around a form, because no board is curved. That is slow, wastes timber, and is the main reason a round bed costs more than a rectangular one of similar size.

Packaging and Transit Protection

The circular platform is the difficult component. It has no flat side, so pressure applied across the curve rather than along it stresses the laminated rail - the crate is therefore built to the circle, with foam supporting the rim continuously rather than at points, and the piece never rests on the carved band.

The headboard travels flat in its own cross-braced crate with rigid boards both faces, its pierced acanthus wings and carved crest individually foam-wrapped and the upholstered oval panel protected with standoff blocking. The carved lion mask, being the most projecting element on the platform, is wrapped separately. All fittings are bagged, labelled and packed with the assembly drawing. Crates are corner-guarded, marked for orientation and lifting points, with a clear instruction that the platform is lifted rather than rolled, and photographed sealed before dispatch.

Shipping and Delivery

Before manufacture we need your room dimensions and intended position, your preferred diameter, and a decision on the mattress - who is supplying it and to what build. Typical lead time is 12 to 14 weeks from order confirmation, longer than a rectangular bed because the platform rail is laminated around a form and needs curing time between stages.

Delivery is free anywhere in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and elsewhere. Our team assembles the bed in the room, levels it and removes packaging. Access needs particular attention: a circular platform cannot be turned diagonally through a doorway the way a rectangular frame can, and its diameter is its widest dimension in every direction. Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

Our craftsmanship assurance covers the solid teak frame, the laminated circular platform rail, its joinery and the hand-carving. If the platform rail fails, a joint works loose or a carved element separates because of a fault in the making - rather than through impact, misuse or an attempted self-repair - we repair or replace it. Mattress, upholstery and bedding are separate items covered by their own terms.

Rotate a round mattress regularly and vary the angle each time - because a round bed has no fixed head and foot, the mattress can be turned through any angle, which distributes wear far better than a rectangular mattress ever can. Do it monthly. Clean the continuous carved platform band with a dry soft brush; it sits at shin height and is the part most often knocked by vacuum cleaners and feet. Dust the pierced headboard wings on both faces, since a round bed is often placed away from a wall. Never any liquid cleaner on gold leaf. Tighten fixings a fortnight after assembly.
