Overview

This is a hand-carved solid teak wood arched wall mirror finished in gold, built around a shaped glass plate with a carved crest of two facing birds and a central plume. Its design language is late Baroque read through an Indian workshop: a shaped arch rather than a plain rectangle, scrolling acanthus running the height of both stiles, mirrored infill panels set into the openwork crest, and a carved shell anchoring the base. The proportions are deliberately vertical, so the piece adds height to a wall instead of spreading across it.

It is made for rooms where the mirror is used as well as admired - above a dressing table, in a bedroom, in a guest bath or a powder room, or on a narrow stretch of hall wall between doors. The slimmer frame section means it hangs comfortably in spaces that could not take a heavy overmantel. Because the carving and gilding are done by hand, each piece varies slightly, and the gold can be taken warmer, cooler or more distressed to match existing hardware and woodwork. Handcrafted Indian luxury at a scale that fits real homes.

The Story Behind This Mirror

Narrow frames are harder than wide ones. There is less timber to work with, so every cut has to be right the first time, and the carver has to leave strength exactly where the piece will hang from. That is why this mirror begins with careful board selection - straight, tight-grained seasoned teak, chosen for the run of the grain along the length of each stile rather than for surface colour.

The crest is carved as its own composition before the frame is assembled. The two birds are shaped from the solid, wings and tails cut free of the background so light passes behind them, and the plume between them is worked last so its curve sits proud of everything around it. Only then are the small mirrored panels fitted into the openings, which is what makes the crest read as light rather than as a block of wood. The stiles are carved separately, the acanthus scrolls cut in a continuous run so the rhythm does not break at the joint. Hand-sanding follows, then gold laid in coats and rubbed back at the raised edges by hand, so wear appears where a hand would naturally touch it. The shaped plate is fitted last.

Packaging and Transit Protection

The vulnerable points on this mirror are the carved birds, the plume tip and the small mirrored panels inside the crest. Each of those is protected before anything else. Projecting carving is individually wrapped in high-density foam and taped clear of the surface so no adhesive touches gilding. The crest panels and the main plate are covered with a shatter-retention film and backed with a rigid board, so a knock cannot push glass into the carving behind it.

The whole frame is then sleeved in a continuous foam blanket, corner-guarded at all four corners, and blocked into a fitted wooden crate with foam on every face so nothing shifts on a long road journey. Because this is a tall, narrow piece, the crate is built and marked to travel upright - handling instructions are printed on the outside. We photograph the mirror wrapped and the crate sealed and send those images to you before dispatch. On delivery, open the crate against the packing list and inspect before signing; any transit damage is ours to resolve.

Shipping and Delivery

Every piece is made to order after you confirm. Typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks, moving toward the longer end if you change the height, the glass shape, the crest detail or the polish tone. The exact date is confirmed in writing when the order is placed, and we send progress photographs at the carving stage and again after finishing so you can see the piece before it ships.

Delivery is free anywhere in India. We book and manage the transport, and our team coordinates unloading and placement at your address rather than handing over a crate at the gate. Let us know in advance about stairs, lift dimensions or society service-entry rules and we will plan the route. For a tall wall mirror like this we also advise on the right hanging hardware for your wall type, since fixing choice matters more than frame weight. International orders are quoted case by case - send us the destination and we will price freight and documentation separately.

Craftsmanship Assurance and Care

The solid teak frame and its hand-carving carry our craftsmanship assurance. If a joint opens or a carved element separates because of how the piece was made - rather than because of impact, misuse or an attempted self-repair - we will repair or replace it. Glass breakage after delivery, water damage and damage from unsuitable wall fixings sit outside the assurance.

Care takes a minute. Dust the crest and the acanthus runs with a soft dry cloth, and use a clean dry brush for the pierced openings and the mirrored crest panels where cloth will not reach. Do not use water, chemical polish, alcohol or ammonia cleaners anywhere on the gilded surface - they strip the finish and it cannot be spot-repaired invisibly. When cleaning the glass, spray onto the cloth rather than the mirror so nothing runs down into the frame or behind the crest panels. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, bathroom steam vents and air-conditioner outflow. Mount on a solid wall using anchors rated comfortably above the mirror weight, and check the fixings once a year.
